Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences (SMP - acronym originating from the Polish name; when pronounced it resembles phonetically the Polish word for vulture) - it is an up-to-date way of educating students in several departments of the Jagiellonian University (12 branches to choose from: advanced materials and nanotechnology, astronomy, biophysics, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, computer science, environmental protection, geology, geography, mathematics and physics).

What is so special about those studies?
Individual composing of the program from the very beginning, under the supervision of personal tutor (scientific assistant). Each student selects courses which are most interesting for her/him from the whole offer of all mathematical and natural sciences departments.
Interdisciplinarity - possibility to attend courses from various scientific fields. The final choice of the leading branch (one of the eleven listed above) must be made after completing the second year of studies. There are certain restrictions concerning the choice, as stated in the announcements of the SMP Council.
• After successful completion of the first stage (three years) of the studies, the graduate receives title of Bachelor of Science within the chosen branch. After continuing the education in the SMP framework on the second stage (two years) of studies the graduate obtains the title of Master of Science in one of the twelve branches, corresponding to the chosen (after the second year) specialization.
Stimulating self-reliance, developing the ability to make right choices, broadening the view on the science as a whole, individual way of self-planned education and early engagement in the regular research work result in an excellent preparation of the SMP students for their further career and private life.
The experiences made so far (this method of education has been introduced in 1993/94) show that the SMP students reach outstanding results in their work and for their achievements obtain numerous awards and scholarships.
